Double-network nanocomposite hydrogel beads of alginate/polyacrylamide/cellulose nanocrystals with improved mechanical and rheological performances

Alginate-based beads have been extensively studied for the removal of various pollutants including dyes, heavy metals, and antibiotics in wastewater. However, hydrogel beads composed solely of alginate reveal several weaknesses in terms of mechanical and structural performances due to high degree of swelling and poor structural integrity. Hence, double-network (DN) hydrogels consisting of two different polymeric components have emerged as alternative because the secondary network confers the low-swelling property as well as high mechanical strength. Nonetheless, the performances of DN hydrogel beads still does not meet the requirements in various application fields. In the current study, therefore, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), biocompatible and renewable materials, are incorporated into alginate-based DN hydrogel beads to enhance the mechanical and dye-absorption performances while retaining the eco-friendliness.
