Graphene oxide nanoribbon hydrogel for scalable fabrication of nanofiltration membrane

The preparation of carbon materials-based hydrogel and its viscoelastic properties are essential for their broad application and scale-up. However, there has been only studies about viscoelastic property or hydrogel of carbon based materials such as graphene oxide (GO) or carbon nanotube (CNT) but not graphene nanoribbon (GNR), a narrow strip of graphene. Herein, we have identified the assembly of GNR by preparing high concentrated (50 mg/mL) oxidized GNR (GONR) aqueous solvent forming hydrogel. Exfoliated individual GONRs sequentially assemble into strings (~1 mg/mL), nanoplates (~20 mg/mL), and a macroporous scaffold (50 mg/mL) with increasing concentration. The GONR hydrogels showed viscoelastic shear-thinning behavior enabling shear-coating method to form large-area GONR films. The film was formed by entanglement and stacking of the GONR with outstanding nanofiltration performance under high pressure, cross-flow, and long-term filtration.
