Hyperbranched polyglycidol (HBP) has attracted increasing attention for a wide variety of applications such as drug delivery systems, hydrogel substrates and coating biomaterials. In this study, a series of nonionic surfactants derived from HBP and natural oils have been synthesized. Hyper-branched surfactants of various degree of branching (DB = 0.3–0.6) were obtained via ring-opening multibranching polymerization of glycidol using heterogeneous double metal cyanide or homogeneous potassium methoxide as catalysts and natural oils such as soybean oil, linseed oil, palm oil and castor oil as initiators. The chemical structures of the surfactants were determined by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. By tuning the degree of branching of the surfactants, the solubility and the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance values can be controlled.
