Preparation of Melamine-formaldehyde Resin with Meso-macroporous Structure via High Internal Phase Emulsion Polymerization and Solvent-assisted Curing

A meso-macroporous structure of melamine-formaldehyde resin with high surface area has been achieved by high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) polymerization and solvent-assisted curing. HIPE polymerization is a facile prearation method for porous materials with 3 components, oil phase, aqueous phase, and staibilizer. In this study, we synthesized macroporous melamine-formaldehyde resin (PolyHIPE) by using HIPE polymerization. Also, solvent-assisted curing method generated a mesoporous structure in the skeletal framework of melamine-formaldehyde polyHIPE. The hierarchical porous structure of melamine-formaldehyde polyHIPE is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Hg porosimetry, N2 sorption isotherm and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis.
