A series of hyperbranched poly(glycidol carbonate) polyols were synthesized by direct copolymerization of carbon dioxide and glycidol using heterogeneous double metal cyanide catalyst. The copolymerization was performed in the presence of different solvents and different solvent/monomer ratio. The catalyst was characterized by common technique including infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. The degree of branching and carbonate content of the resultant polyols were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopies. The thermal properties of the produced polyols were also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses. This work offers a promising and simple strategy for producing polycarbonate polyols as precursor for polyurethane.
