Surface Modification of ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots with Carbazole-Based Ligands

Ligand tuning of quantum dots greatly influences charge interaction within electroluminescent devices. Conjugated ligands have been reported to facilitate the charge/energy transfer from the ligands to the quantum dots. We report a carbazole-based ligand for a deep-blue emitting ZnSe/ZnS quantum dot . Conventional carbazole ligands form excimers by strong interaction of aromatic groups, thus reduces EL device efficiency. To compensate the vulnerability, the ligand was designed to anchor to the QDs through 3-position of a carbazole unit. To guarantee solubility of the QDs, N-position of the carbazole was modified with alkyl chains.
