Developing a high-performance proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with minimal use of Pt is essential in cost reduction of the PEMFC, and its commercialization. Herein, we developed the facile synthesis method of supporting particles by emulsion polymerization, allowing high yield and simple method with low cost. The fabricated single cell exhibit a high mass activity in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and a high durability after 30,000 cycles. The same power density could be obtained with 1/20 of Pt usage, when the developed catalyst and commercial Pt/C were compared. Also, size-controlled carbon particles were designed to elucidate the effect of particle size on the PEMFC performance. As the particle size decreased, the PEMFC performance increased with enhancing mass transport behavior.
