Synthesis of Nonionic Surfactants Based on Hyper-Branched Polyglycidol

Hyper-branched polyglycidol with various degree of branching has been employed for a wide variety of application such as drug delivery systems, hydrogel substrates and coating biomaterials. In this study, we have synthesized various nonionic surfactants based on hyper-branched polyglycidol via ring-opening multibranching polymerization of glycidol in the presence of various initiators such as hydroxy-terminated lipophilic polymers using heterogeneous double metal cyanide catalyst. The chemical structures of the hyper-branched surfactants were determined by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The degree of branching and the hydrophile-lipophile balance values of the surfactants are varied depending on the type of initiators.
