Shape memory polymers are a fascinating materials to have the ability to preserve deformed shape and recover elastically when triggered by external stimuli. Among them, elastic shape memory polymers with metallic conductivity can find application in soft robotics, electronics and wearable sensors. Gallium used in this work has a low melting point(29.8℃). This along with its high conductivity and pattern ability enabled the use of gallium as the conductive medium in soft electronics. Here, we have demonstrated shape memory films with stretchable and self healing liquid metal wires. The ability of gallium in the microchannels to transform its phase from liquid to solid can greatly enhance the effective modulus of the film enabling stiffness tuning over wide ranges of moduli. This increment in stiffness allows the film to have shape memory by storing and recovering its elastic energy when heated. In addition, if severed, the liquid metal wire can be self healed electrically by body heat.
