Nylon, a synthetic polyamide, is produced in large amounts from petrochemical-derived monomers. Nylon materials such as nylon 66 and nylon 6 have excellent physical properties, but the petrochemical manufacturing facilities that produce them cause environmental problems. Therefore, the production of bio-based nylons has attracted much attention and nylon 56 can be manufactured using bio-based monomers in some reports. In this study, we demonstrate synthesis and characterization of nylon 56 that is studied as a basic research for producing the bio-based nylon 56 and replacing conventional petroleum-based nylon 66. Bio-based nylon 56 was prepared by solid-state and interfacial polymerization. The chemical, thermal and physical properties of nylon 56 according to synthetic methods were compared by FT-IR, Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and universal test machine (UTM).
