Thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes can be fabricated via interfacial polymerization using m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) as monomers on the surface of polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes. The TFC RO membranes exhibit excellent separation performance for water desalination process, while trade-off relationship between water permeability and salt rejection should be overcome to further increase energy efficiency of RO process. Thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes containing nanofillers in the selective layer have attracted attention due to improved separation performance. Among various nanofillers, Schiff base network-1 (SNW-1) can be a candidate for a nanofiller in TFN RO membranes because of its microporous structure and chemical stability. In this study, SNW-1 was synthesized and incorporated to the selective layer of TFC RO membranes to fabricate TFN RO membranes. As a result, separation performance of the membranes can be improved.
