Herein, we demonstrate a room-temperature approach for fabrication of non-polymeric thin wires by injecting materials into the elastomeric hollow fiber and subsequent drawing of it. In this work, thin wires of two different materials are fabricated, i.e. metallic and ceramic wires. Although mechanical and physical properties of both the wires differ, the fabrication approaches are identically based on drawing materials at near room temperature. For this purpose, materials e.g. liquid metal and SiCN ceramic precursor are injected in hollow fibers. To get wires of different cross-sections, fiber with materials is stretched for different strains. Solidifying the core can form free-standing wires with thin cross-sections. Additionally, the solidified cores can give the polymer fiber the enhanced mechanical property, thus, the fiber can preserve deformed shape exhibiting toughening soft fiber. The ability of self-healing of thin metallic wires at body temperature is also demonstrated.
