Formaldehyde is one of the hazardous volatile organic compounds and is known to be a major cause of sick building syndrome. In this study, core-shell polystyrene(PS)/polyaniline(PANI) composite microparticles were prepared by applying the Swelling-Diffusion-Interfacial Polymerization(SDIPM) process. PANI was uniformly coated on the core PS particles and the prepared PS-PANI core-shell microparticles showed a high encapsulation efficiency. A formaldehyde detecting sensor was fabricated by coating the PS-PANI core-shell microparticles on the Interdigitated Electrodes(IDEs) device. The formaldehyde sensor showed not only an excellent sensitivity for 1~50 ppm of formaldehyde but also a manageable controllability. In addition, it showed a clear reversibility indicating that the sensor could be reused at least 3 times for the detection of formaldehyde.
