Materials from nature can perform a wide variety of complex performances, providing good opportunities for the development of new materials and processing systems. As a sustainable and renewable source, in this work, pine cones were employed as a biomass mold to create new and useful metal/carbon nanohybrids (MCNHs). The unique ability of the cone to absorb water was used as the driving force to introduce the precursor solution into the cone mold. The functional group inside the cone mold acts as a stationary site for metal ions in aqueous solutions of single metal precursors or binary metal mixtures, leading to the controlled deposition of metal phases in confined interior spaces. Subsequent heat treatment resulted in unique MCNHs which have great potential for highly efficient electrocatalysts.
