Abstract

Molecular engineering of a novel thiophene-conjugated trialkoxy benzamide (TABA-Th) provides a coatable pathway to broadband antireflective films. Designed with a thiophene core and flexible dendrons, TABA-Th self-assembles into highly mobile hexagonal nanocolumns via hydrogen bonding and kinetic control. Mechanical shearing of these nanocolumns onto uniaxially aligned nematic reactive mesogens yields a transparent, colorless two-layered film. Optical analyses confirm the nanocolumns align orthogonally to the nematic layer’s refractive axis, enabling nearly ideal negative dispersion retardation. By integrating this alignment with shear-coating, TABA-Th enables the fabrication of advanced biaxial quarter-wave plates, offering a highly processable alternative to conventional optical materials.
