Abstract

Chemical functionalization of lignin is an effective strategy for transforming biomass-derived polymers into functional adsorbents for CO2 capture. Here, lignin was modified with nitrogen-containing groups using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) as a green reaction medium. The DES-mediated process promoted nitrogen functionalization of the lignin structure while maintaining its aromatic framework. Structural evolution before and after modification was examined using 2D-HSQC NMR, FTIR, and elemental analysis, confirming changes in lignin substructures and successful incorporation of nitrogen species. The nitrogen-functionalized lignin exhibited improved CO2 affinity under near-ambient conditions, attributed to enhanced basicity due to the introduced nitrogen sites. This work presents a sustainable chemical route for upgrading lignin into biomass-derived CO2 capture adsorbents.
