Abstract

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) self-organize into chiral nematic liquid crystalline architectures, providing a versatile bio-derived photonic template for engineering advanced composite materials with programmable optical functionality. By integrating diverse optically active components including semiconducting quantum nanorods, photochromic organic molecules, and magnetic nanoparticles into the CNC chiral host matrix through rational co-assembly strategies, we demonstrate composites with tunable circularly polarized light (CPL) emission, real-time handedness switching, and multi-stimuli-responsive actuation. Furthermore, field-directed assembly and shear-based printing approaches enable precise control over helical organization and orientational order across large areas, extending the design space beyond what is accessible through conventional evaporation-induced self-assembly. The resulting freestanding, flexible composite films exhibit large luminescence asymmetry factors and dynamic chiroptical responses triggered by mechanical, optical, chemical, and magnetic stimuli, offering a scalable platform for next-generation photonic applications including optical encryption, sensing, and soft actuators.
