Abstract
Bleeding complications that occur in daily life or during surgery are major causes of morbidity and mortality; therefore, hemostasis is very important. In this study, polyphosphate-modified starch (PMS), a starch-based powder-type hemostatic agent, was fabricated to enhance blood coagulation. Polyphoshosphate modified starch (PMS) was fabricated by synthesizing free amine that binds to phosphate groups in oxidized starch. The chemical structure of PMS was characterized using FT-IR, XPS, 31P NMR, and fluorescamine assay. As a result of the blood coagulation experiment, as the phosphate content increased, the hemostatic ability was decreased. Among the samples, PMS 1 showed the best hemostatic performance and good biocompatibility. In an SD rat hemorrhage model, PMS 1 achieved hemostasis 40% faster than starch and reduced blood loss by over 70%. As a result, polyphosphate is effective as a blood coagulant and may be used in the development of future hemostatic agents.
