Abstract
In this study, silver microcubes were investigated as plasmonic substrates for surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS). Ag microcubes exhibit strong dipolar plasmonic resonances in the mid-infrared region, enabling enhancement of molecular vibrational signals. Compared with Ag rods, Ag microcubes showed a much larger scattering cross-section, indicating that the cube geometry is more suitable for SEIRAS applications. In addition, sharp-edged Ag microcubes provided stronger near-field enhancement than rounded cubes because their sharp edges and vertices promote efficient electric-field localization. The effect of interparticle spacing was also considered. When two microcubes were placed very close to each other, plasmonic coupling caused mode hybridization, producing extinction spectra different from the single-particle resonance. Therefore, well-separated sharp Ag microcubes are preferable for clear and reliable SEIRAS signals. Furthermore, their extinction resonance can be tuned by controlling particle size, allowing selective enhancement of specific molecular vibrational bands. These results suggest that properly spaced sharp Ag microcubes are promising SEIRAS substrates for sensitive biochemical sensing.
