Abstract

A bio-based multifunctional soybean oil (MSO) compatibilizer was synthesized and incorporated into poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)/thermoplastic starch (TPS) blends to improve interfacial compatibility. PBAT/TPS films containing MSO were prepared by melt blending and characterized using FTIR, SEM, tensile testing, DSC, and DMA. FTIR confirmed the successful synthesis of MSO and the formation of intermolecular interactions among the blend components. SEM revealed improved phase dispersion and enhanced interfacial adhesion after MSO incorporation. The incorporation of MSO exhibited improved mechanical performance and ductility. DSC and DMA analyses indicated enhanced chain mobility and more efficient stress transfer across the interface. The multifunctional reactive nature of MSO promoted interfacial coupling and morphological stabilization, resulting in improved blend performance. These findings demonstrate the potential of MSO as an effective bio-based compatibilizer for developing high-performance PBAT/TPS biodegradable materials.
