Abstract
Volatile aldehydes generated by lipid peroxidation, such as hexanal, octanal, and nonanal, are increasingly recognized as biomarkers of oxidative stress and disease, including signatures found in exhaled breath of lung cancer patients. Their detection, however, typically relies on instrument-intensive analytical methods that are difficult to deploy at the point of care. Here we report an amine-functionalized acrylic copolymer that, when coated onto cellulose paper, irreversibly captures volatile aldehydes and translates their presence into a visible colorimetric signal. Secondary amine groups distributed along the polymer backbone bind gaseous aldehydes from the headspace, which can be subsequently released and detected through a chromogenic reaction, producing a colored product readable by the naked eye or by a simple optical measurement. By pairing a tunable amine-functional polymer with an inexpensive paper substrate, this approach offers a simple, low-cost, and field-deployable strategy for colorimetric monitoring of aldehyde biomarkers, with potential utility in point-of-care diagnostics and oxidative-stress sensing.
