Abstract

Vector-borne diseases still pose a significant threat to human health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over the past five years, there have been reports of dengue outbreaks in the Americas and Southeast Asia. Additionally, the Oropos virus has been detected in Brazil, while in 2026, Ebola poses a significant threat in Africa. To prevent the spread of these diseases, people have become more likely to use repellent substances based on active agents DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) or IR3535 (Ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate). However, they are not always able to ensure full protection of humans from insect bites; therefore, the discovery of new repellent compounds and the development of novel application strategies remain critical tasks.
In the present study, derivatives of alkyl (R) butylacetylaminopropionate with various substituents (R = CH3, C3H7, C4H9, C5H11, C6H13, C7H15, C8H17, C9H19, C10H21, C11H23, C12H25) were synthesized. The structures of all synthesized compounds were characterized by ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, FTIR, HPLC-MS/MS, and GC-MS. In addition, the repellent efficacy of the synthesized compounds was assessed against ixodid ticks collected from the taiga forest near Lake Baikal. The obtained results revealed that the IR3535 derivatives exhibit high repellent activity against Ixodes persulcatus ticks.
The synthesized IR3535 derivatives can be applied in the form of fumigating plates for repelling insects, blood-sucking ticks and mosquitoes. Therefore, polymer films based on hydroxypropylcellulose and the synthesized compounds were prepared, and the kinetics of thermodiffusion of the repellents from the obtained materials were studied.
The results suggest the creation of materials with controlled release of the active agent, which opens up new possibilities in the development of personal protective measures for humans against insects.
