Two-step process to produce porous carbon nitrides as efficient photocatalysts to degrade organic pollutants

Abstract
Polymeric carbon nitride (p-C3N4) has shown outstanding photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. This study introduces a novel two-step method for fabricating porous carbon nitride materials. The approach involves first chemically oxidizing p-C3N4 powders, followed by thermal treatment of the oxidized product at 610 °C[1]. The resulting material, referred to as oxidized p-C3N4 after thermal treatment (OCN-T), demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic activity in the degradation of the organic pollutant rhodamine B (RhB). Under visible light, RhB is completely degraded from aqueous solutions within 1 hr. Detailed morphological, chemical, and photophysical analyses indicate that OCN-T possesses a significantly higher surface area, enhanced visible-light absorption, and prolonged lifetime of photoexcited charge carriers compared to the control samples. These characteristics reveal the effectiveness of the two-step process in producing high-performance photocatalysts for visible light applications.
