Abstract

Polymer binders have long been treated as passive, inert adhesives, a minor electrode component whose only task is to hold active particles together. This talk argues for a fundamental reframing: in advanced batteries, the binder is not an adhesive but an architect that actively governs how an electrode is built, stabilized, and even recovered. Drawing on a series of molecularly engineered binder systems, this presentation will show how rational design of polymer chemistry and network architecture transforms the binder into a multifunctional design lever. Beyond adhesion, engineered binders construct and regulate the electrode–electrolyte interface, integrate particles into mechanically resilient and densely packed architectures, and build continuous pathways for fast ion transport. Dynamic and reconfigurable networks further endow electrodes with self-healing capability and, through reversible bonding, enable closed-loop recyclability for sustainable cell design. Crucially, these principles are chemistry-agnostic: the same architectural strategies extend across high-capacity anodes, anion-storage electrodes, and quasi-solid-state systems. By positioning the binder as the organizing framework of the electrode rather than mere glue, this outlines a unifying route toward high-energy-density, durable, and sustainable next-generation batteries.
