Abstract

The growing demand for higher energy density and improved performance has driven the development of post lithium-ion batteries, including lithium-metal and lithium–sulfur batteries. However, their practical implementation is challenged by complex and dynamic electrochemical reactions that govern structural evolution, degradation, and overall battery performance. Understanding these reaction mechanisms is therefore essential for the rational development of advanced electrode materials. This presentation focuses on the development of new electrode materials through a mechanistic understanding of electrochemical reactions in next-generation batteries. By integrating advanced characterization techniques, including operando imaging and synchrotron X-ray analyses, the structural and chemical evolution of electrode materials is investigated under realistic operating conditions. These approaches provide insights into reaction pathways and their relationship with electrochemical performance, enabling the identification of key design principles for high-performance electrode materials for next-generation energy storage systems.
