Abstract
Advances in electrochemical energy storage rely on understanding and controlling the structural processes that dictate electrode performance. Neutron and X-ray diffraction provide complementary, atomic-scale insights into crystal structure, defect chemistry, ion transport pathways, and phase evolution in battery materials. When combined with high-resolution and operando methodologies, these techniques enable direct observation of structural transformations during electrochemical cycling, revealing the mechanisms underpinning capacity, stability, and degradation. This presentation will showcase how diffraction-based investigations are accelerating the development of next-generation electrode materials, for example, the high-voltage spinel cathode for lithium-ion batteries. Examples will highlight the power of integrating scattering methods with spectroscopies to establish comprehensive structure–property relationships across multiple length and time scales. By demonstrating how advanced diffraction techniques provide the fundamental knowledge required to design and optimise energy-storage materials, this work underscores their central role in driving future battery innovation.
