Abstract

High-performance polymer composites play a vital role in modern defense systems due to their exceptional strength-to-weight ratios and structural versatility. As modern military platforms evolve toward higher mobility, operational efficiency, and extended service life, the fundamental material requirements for defense applications have expanded significantly beyond basic weight reduction.

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of current technological trends and core material requirements in defense polymer composites. Key developments in matrix resin chemistry, reinforcement technology, and processing techniques are discussed with an emphasis on fulfilling primary performance demands, such as high structural integrity, damage tolerance, and thermal stability under severe operational conditions. Furthermore, the paradigm shift toward integrating secondary functional capabilities into primary load-bearing structures is explored. Finally, remaining technical challenges—including scalable manufacturing, cost-effectiveness, and long-term durability—are presented alongside strategic perspectives for future materials development in the defense sector.
