Abstract
Interfaces dictate most biological interactions, and coatings allow us to engineer interfaces to control how surfaces interact with the world. While various coating technologies exist, metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) have unique properties including universal adherence and modularity that make them ideal for consumer products. Moreover, the natural abundance of precursors and the wide variety of metals and organic ligands that can be used to prepare MPNs, means that cost and safety can be maintained at scale. Specifically, MPNs can be deposited on any substrate or at any interface, which allows for library of elegant materials to be engineered rapidly (<10 s) and cheaply simply via mixing. Besides fundamentals into what MPNs are and the versatility they provide for making coatings, assembling hierarchical materials, and even coating organisms, this talk will also touch on recent translational efforts related to different applications in the textiles and cosmetics space. Collectively, the ease of synthesis, use of simple and safe precursors, and amenability to at-home and industrial application highlight why MPNs have immense promise for research and industry and have already found practical application in various settings.
