Abstract
Around the turn of the twenty first century, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of women leading doctoral-granting academic institutions in the United States of America. It is important to carefully explore the factors behind these progressive changes, especially looking at how the issue of gender impacts women differently than men in their career endeavors. What were the non-linear pathways these women pursued to becoming presidents of major universities? What barriers and problems they endured? How their ambitions to race forward inspired the courage to face the challenges on this rocky path?
