Abstract

In the last years it has been established that, like in triboelectricity, moving water drops can separate electric charges. This phenomenon is called slide or contact electrification. For hydrophobic polymer films drops spontaneously acquire a positive charge while they deposit negative charges on the polymer. The electric potentials can easily reach 1 kV and for polymer films on metals the electric field strength can exceed dieletric breakdown. In the presentation the current state of knowledge about slide electrification and its consequences for drop motion, deposition of solutes and corrosion will be described.
