Abstract
Polymeric biomaterials such as hydrogels and nanofibers are widely used as versatile platforms for biomedical applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering, owing to their tunable elasticity, hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. Despite their widespread usage, their general lack of magnetic and electronic properties prevents more sophisticated utilization in bioelectronics that have gained significant popularity in recent years. Herein, we present the development of nanocomposite hydrogel and nanofibers incorporating nanomaterials demonstrating magnetoelectric (ME) properties. Due to the coupling of ME, not only magnetic and electric properties are separately demonstrated, one can also directly induce the other, which is highly desired for remote activation of electronic properties by external magnetic field. Utilizing this unique ME coupling properties, ME nanocomposite materials are employed as (1) cell culture platform that allows electrical stimulation of the cells by external magnetic field without the need for electrodes, and (2) dual-mode biosensor capable of highly sensitive detection of bioanalytes by both electric and magnetic signals.
