Abstract
Polyurethane foam (PUF) is widely used in various fields, such as construction and automobiles, due to its excellent thermal insulation and mechanical properties. As the use of PUF increases, waste disposal has emerged as a critical issue. Currently, waste PUF is recycled through methods such as physical and chemical recycling and incineration. Among these, chemical recycling methods are receiving attention for their potential to increase added value.
In this study, we intend to apply an esterification reaction to control the properties of regenerated polyol (R-polyol) recovered through glycolysis. The properties of R-polyol, such as molecular weight and hydroxyl value, can vary depending on the decomposition conditions. Therefore, a modification process is required to secure properties suitable for the final application. Accordingly, we aim to increase added value by controlling the properties of R-polyol using an esterification reaction. As a result of analyzing the characteristics of R-polyol, GPC analysis confirmed that the number average molecular weight (Mn) was approximately 900 g/mol and the hydroxyl value was 685 mg KOH/g. Based on this, we plan to perform an esterification reaction of R-polyol. We intend to confirm the chemical structure of the product through FT-IR and 1H-NMR analysis, and evaluate the changes in physical properties resulting from the esterification reaction by measuring molecular weight, viscosity, hydroxyl value, and acid value.
This society intends to present the basic physical properties of R-polyol and strategies for controlling properties through esterification reactions. Furthermore, based on the results of evaluating the structure and physical properties of R-polyol following the esterification reaction, we aim to discuss the potential for adding high value to R-polyol and the potential for utilizing recycled polyols.
