Aminotriazole Modified PE-g-GMA Filter for Selective Metal ion Adsorption

Abstract

This study aims to prepare functionalized surfaces for metal ion adsorption by chemically modifying the epoxy groups of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) grafted onto polyethylene (PE) filters via electron beam (EB) irradiation. GMA-grafted PE filters were first prepared, and chelating functional groups were subsequently introduced through a ring-opening reaction of the epoxy groups with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. The introduced triazole moieties exhibit the capability to selectively adsorb metal cations and anions depending on the solution pH environment. Under acidic conditions at pH 2.9, metal anions, specifically arsenic (As) and selenium (Se), are adsorbed via electrostatic attraction resulting from the protonation of the functional groups. Conversely, at pH 5.5, metal cations, specifically nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co), are selectively adsorbed through coordination bonding with the lone pair electrons of the nitrogen atoms. The chemical and physical characteristics of the modified PE filters were comprehensively analyzed using FT-IR, SEM/EDS, and XPS. Furthermore, the selective adsorption efficiency for both cations and anions in response to pH variations was ultimately confirmed through quantitative analysis of concentration changes before and after immersion in As, Se, Ni, and Co standard solutions at pH 2.9 and 5.5 using ICP-MS.
