Abstract

The accumulation of non-biodegradable microplastics has become a serious environmental problem, especially in single-use plastic products such as straws and packaging materials. Paper-based alternatives have attracted considerable attention because they are environmentally friendly. However, paper easily absorbs water and quickly loses its mechanical strength under wet conditions, which limits its practical use. In this study, we propose a biodegradable parylene-coated paper platform for sustainable paper straw applications. The biodegradable parylene film was prepared by copolymerizing parylene with 5,6-benzo-2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane (BMDO), a cyclic ketene acetal monomer that introduces hydrolytically degradable ester bonds into the polymer backbone. The biodegradable parylene layer was deposited onto paper by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, forming a thin, uniform, and conformal coating without changing the lightweight and flexible properties of the paper. The coated paper is expected to show improved water resistance, better dimensional stability, and enhanced mechanical durability under wet conditions while remaining biodegradable after disposal. This work demonstrates the potential of biodegradable parylene coatings as eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic-coated paper and provides a promising strategy for sustainable disposable products such as paper straws, packaging materials, and other paper-based applications.
