Long-Term Stable Organic Electrochemical Transistors via Bio-Derived Choline Ionic Liquids

Abstract

A bioinspired, choline-based ionic liquid is introduced into organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) to achieve enhanced electrical performance and long-term stability. Spectroscopic analysis and electrochemical characterization demonstrate that strong ionic interactions between the choline-based ionic liquid and PEDOT:PSS crucially govern device operation, yielding an ultra-fast response time of 80 ns that surpasses state-of-the-art devices. Benefiting from these robust interactions, the developed OECTs can reliably sense physiological signals, such as electrocardiograms (ECGs) and electromyograms (EMGs), for up to 3 months. Furthermore, ultrathin OECTs and three-dimensional (3D) arrays exhibit consistent operational performance when attached to skin. These results highlight the substantial potential of this platform for mapping biological signals in cells or tissues and integrating with wireless systems to enable advanced remote medical services.
