Abstract

From 2006 to 2016 an International Research Training Group (IRTG) with the title “Self-Organized Materials for Optoelectronics” was run between the University of Mainz (Germany) and Seoul National University and Hannam University (Daejon, Korea). It was finanzed jointly by the German Science Foundation (DFG) and the Korean Science Foundation (KOSEF). It organized a scientific exchange on three different levels of education. At first, it allowed German master students to stay half a year in Korea for their master thesis (DAAD). Secondly it organized (and paid) an exchange during the PhD thesis. In this way 39 Korean and 57 German PhD students spend at least 6 months during their PhD work at the partner institutions. As a specialty, it was possible to obtain a joint PhD document for this thesis. In this way 26 German students and 6 Korean students obtained joint PhD document. At least also some Korean and German Post (4) docs were included in this exchange. Noteworthy is here especially Dr. Patrick Theato (now professor at the KIT in Karlsruhe), who acted for 4 years as “part time faculty” at the SNU within the “WCU-program”.
The scientific topic aimed mostly on the improvement of OLEDs, either by using liquid crystalline materials to improve charge transport [1-2] or by working with hybrids from inorganic semiconductors and semiconducting polymers [3-5] to improve charge injection into the fluorescent QDs [4-5] and a combination of both. See especially the complete volumes containing refs. [1] and [3] for an overview about the first and the second part of the project (IRTG).  In addition joint work included also the use of redox-active polymers like sulfur [6, 7] and attempts to prepare biomedical carriers for biomedicine [8].
