Abstract

The transition toward a circular economy demands material systems that simultaneously achieve functional performance, manufacturing feasibility, and sustainable end-of-life management. In this work, we present an integrated research perspective on circular material development based on the design and engineering of next generation biobased materials. Our approach explores multiple material design strategies spanning sustainable polymer development, lifecycle responsive material functionality, and end-of-life considerations for resource circulation. Rather than focusing on a single material platform or degradation mechanism, this framework aims to establish design principles that connect material synthesis, performance optimization, process compatibility, and circular utilization pathways. Particular emphasis is placed on the concept that sustainability should be incorporated as a material design parameter from the earliest stages of development rather than treated as a post use solution. By integrating approaches across molecular design, functional interfaces, and controllable lifecycle behaviors, this work highlights opportunities to extend material utility while enabling recovery, regeneration, and reduced environmental burden. Collectively, this presentation proposes a circular by design paradigm for advanced biobased materials and discusses future directions toward scalable and practical implementation of circular material systems.
