Abstract

The development of non-specific means of protection against blood-sucking arthropods is still of high practical significance. Individual protection, such as fumigators, aerosols and lotions containing repellent and insecticidal active ingredients, and protective clothing, are considered to be effective. Excessive use of fumigator insecticide fluids in unvented areas can lead to allergic reactions and respiratory irritation, which is dangerous for vulnerable groupes. The design of alternative protection based on thermal release of low-toxicity repellents, such as IR3535 and its derivatives, is relevant. A key strategy for enhancing the activity of the commercial repellent IR3535 is targeted molecular design. The decision was to investigate the impact of altering the ester fragment on the properties of IR3535 and assess the efficiency against ticks Ixodes persulcatus from biodegradable polymeric materials.
The synthesis of IR3535 derivatives was performed using a two-step method, including initial alkaline hydrolysis of the parent compound, followed by saponification and esterification of the resulting intermediate. The synthesized compounds were then incorporated into a biodegradable polymeric material based on hydroxypropyl cellulose. The polymer and active ingredient mixture, dissolved in ethanol, was poured into a Petri dish and dried until the resulting films ceased to change in weight. The final concentration of active ingredients in the films was determined using HPLC-UV. Film thickness was monitored as well, varying between 50 and 60 µm.
The repellent activity against ticks Ixodes persulcatus was assessed using a choice trial [1]. Research has shown that alkyl butyl acetylaminopropionates are a promising class of repellent for protecting humans from ixodid ticks. It was found that butyl 3-(N-butylacetamido)propanoate exhibited the greatest repellent activity.
