Abstract

The current work represents the importance of polyacrylate hydrogels based on green materials such as chitosan and Ulva lactuca algae. In this regard, three hydrogel materials were prepared and employed for the removal of cationic crystal violet dye from simulated solutions. The parent hydrogel is Polyacrylic acid-crosslinked Polyacrylamide (PAAc/PAAm), which was then fabricated with either chitosan (PAAc/PAAm/CS) or Ulva lactuca (PAAc/PAAm/Ul), aiming to make a comparison between the effect of Chitosan and Ulva in enhancing the removal performance of the initial hydrogel. The prepared hydrogels were characterized using several  Characterization techniques, including FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM, and AFM. The workability of the prepared hydrogels was investigated as a function of pH, sorbent dose, time towards CV dye. The maximum dye removal was attained at pH 11 for the base hydrogel, pH 7 for the chitosan form, and pH 9 for the Ulva form. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies showed that all adsorbents were well fitted to PFO model and the Langmuir isotherm. PAAc/PAAm/CS achieved the maximum dye removal with % R (97%) and Q value (48.57 mg/g). Overall, the results affirm the effectiveness of the prepared hydrogels in removing cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.
