Biodegradable Nanocomposites Based on Surface-Modified Cellulose Nanofibers with Enhanced Compatibility and Mechanical Properties

In this study, we developed biodegradable nanocomposites (BNCs) and investigated their properties. A blend of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was used as a biodegradable matrix (BM). To enhance the dispersibility of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) in the BM and enhance compatibility between the BM and CNFs, a functional compatibilizer based on heterocyclic moieties and PLA blocks (CHLA) was synthesized. A series of BNC films were prepared by thermal blending on the BM with CHLA-modified CNFs. The resulting biodegradable films exhibited enhanced mechanical properties compared to the pure BM film. These findings demonstrate that CHLA significantly improves the dispersibility of CNFs, and CHLA-modified CNFs serve as effective reinforcing fillers. The mechanisms underlying the improved dispersibility, compatibility, and mechanical properties were elucidated through molecular simulations and FT-IR spectroscopy using model systems.
