Status and Challenges of Durable Biobased Plastics in LG Chem

The ultimate goal of global plastic regulations is to shift materials to a focus on 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle). However, biobased plastics (including compostable plastics) are expected to be substituted for applications where the application of recycled materials is limited such as food packaging, fiber and engineering plastics with high content of additives. LG Chem is preparing biobased plastic business with PLA, PA56 (Bio-Nylon) as representative items. PLA is produced by a polymerization process of lactic acid, fermented with corn starch, sugarcane, or organic wastes. PA56 is manufactured through a polycondensation process with biobased PMDA (Pentamethylenediamine, C5 diamine) and adipic acid (C6 diacid). We are looking forward to their application and expansion in various industries like fiber, auto, and E&E due to their intrinsic properties as well as biobased materials.
