A new method to fabricate high-performance anion exchange membranes for water electrolysis

Anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis (AEMWE) attracted significant attention as a commercially feasible method for green hydrogen production. However, many previously developed AEMs have limited performance and durability resulting from their inherent chemical structures. In this study, we propose a new chemical reaction that can assemble high-performance and chemically robust AEMs. The fabricated AEM has a unique quaternary ammonium polymer network, which is significantly different from those achieved by conventional AEM fabrication methods. This unique structure is favorable for enhancing anion conductivity and reinforcing the thermochemical stability of the fabricated AEM. The AEM fabricated in this study exhibits superior AEMWE performance to commercial AEMs and ensures long-term operation. Our strategy offers an advanced way to fabricate membranes with high ion-exchange ability.
