The production of Bacterial Cellulose sheets using extract of waste onion as culture medium for vegan leather

Leather is used in various fields such as fashion, furniture, and its demand is increasing. However, since the previous leather manufacturing process involves animal sacrifice or generates wastewater, research on the development of eco-friendly alternative materials is being conducted. Herein, bacterial cellulose (BC) sheets were synthesized through microbial culture using extract of waste onion as a culture medium and used as an alternative material similar to leather. The properties of BC sheets were analyzed using FT-IR, SEM, DSC, XRD. The mechanical attributes of the BC sheet were tested using UTM in tensile mode. Further, BC sheets were biologically evaluated for their cytotoxicity using NIH3T3 cells. The manufactured BC has properties comparable to commercial cellulose, which can be used as an alternative to synthesis artificial leather. The current work highlights an effective way to contribute to the eco-friendly textile industry by recycling waste onions into vegan leather.
