Structural Isomers of Pyrrolopyrroledione Incorporated into Dihydroindenofluorene-Based Polymeric Donors for Non-Fullerene Organic Solar Cells

In the quest to improve non-fullerene organic solar cells, three novel polymers, P1–P3, were synthesized by polymerizing dihydroindenofluorene with structural isomers of pyrrolopyrroledione derivatives. In this study, structural isomers of weak and strong electron-accepting IFPPD or LFPPD, were used. The impact of these isomers on the polymers’ properties was evaluated. P1, featuring IF and IFPPD units, had a high optical bandgap (Eg) of 2.39 eV and HOMO/LUMO energy levels of 5.54 eV/–3.15 eV. P2, composed of IF and LFPPD units, showed a lower Eg of 1.76 eV with HOMO/LUMO levels of 5.40 eV/–3.64 eV. P3, including both IFPPD and LFPPD units, also exhibited an Eg of 1.76 eV and HOMO/LUMO levels of 5.42 eV/–3.66 eV. This study indicates that while IF-based polymers with PPD derivatives possess suitable optoelectronic properties for NFA-OSCs, their photovoltaic performance remains limited.
