Hot melt adhesives (HMAs) are more environmentally friendly than other types of adhesives due to their solvent-free nature. However, the conventional polymer used in HMAs are not fully eco-friendly because they do not biodegrade. In this study, HMA was prepared through MA-g-PBAT, which is poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) grafted with maleic anhydride (MA). The grafted MA was confirmed through FT-IR and titration analyses. Single lap shear tests demonstrated that all MA-g-PBAT samples exhibited higher lap shear strength compared to pristine PBAT. Additionally, dynamic rheological property analysis revealed that MA-g-PBAT had higher modulus and viscosity than pristine PBAT under the same conditions. Aerobic biodegradation test showed that MA-g-PBAT had similar biodegradability to pristine PBAT. Therefore, this study confirms that MA-g-PBAT, created by grafting MA onto PBAT, can be utilized as a biodegradable HMA.
