Phase transitions are critical phenomena to determine the properties of matter. Thus, there have been significant efforts to discover underlying science in the phenomena for both fundamental and technological reasons. Although an impressive body of thermodynamic data has been accumulated, the dynamics at the scale of single atoms is completely unknown. In this talk, I will introduce direct visualization of particle-level processes involved in a variety of phase transitions through colloidal modeling. Each particle mimics the behavior of a single atom or molecule and their condensed phases form many of the same phases as molecular system such as crystals, liquid, and glasses. Therefore, the large assemblies of the colloidal particles can be used as a precise model system. Since each particle can be tracked in space and time by a use of optical techniques, colloidal modeling shows a direct probing of dynamic processes involved in fundamental phenomena of condensed matter.
