PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) is known for its excellent transparency and scratch resistance but has relatively low mechanical properties, such as impact strength. We have developed a simple method to improve these properties by melt crosslinking without using solvents or catalysts. This process involves adding 0.05 ~ 2 mol% of amine crosslinkers to PMMA pellets or powder and then subjecting the mixture to high temperature and pressure to achieve crosslinking. The resulting PMMA demonstrates enhanced impact strength compared to non-crosslinked PMMA. Additionally, using a blend of flexible and rigid crosslinkers further improves the mechanical properties. We conducted a comparative analysis of the physical and chemical attributes of the crosslinked PMMA, selecting crosslinkers based on their specific characteristics to optimize performance.
