Characterization of Phthalate-free Plasticizer-based Polyvinyl Chloride Gels for Electrically Tunable Microlens Applications

Phthalate plasticizers, such as dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are commonly used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to import ductility. However, phthalate plasticizers have been shown to exhibit toxic effects on both the environment and human health. Consequently, many countries have implemented strict restrictions and regulations on the use of phthalate plasticizers, leading to the exploration of phthalate-free alternatives. In this study, we developed phthalate-free plasticizer-based PVC (Pf-PVC) gels. We examined the molecular interactions between PVC chains and phthalate-free plasticizers, and investigated the transmittance, dielectric constant, and leakage current of the Pf-PVC gels. Additionally, an electrically focus-tunable microlens was fabricated using the Pf-PVC gel, demonstrating a tunable focal length ranging from 5 to 29.3 mm at relatively low voltages (90%), and fast imaging speed.
