In this paper, visible photonic crystal hydrogel (PCH) sensors were developed by embedding ordered colloidal photonic crystals (PCs) into eco-friendly bio-polymer-based hydrogels. According to Bragg's law, the periodic alignment of the photonic crystals (PCs) can reflect light of specific wavelengths. In 3D PC layers, changes in the spacing between PC layers result in shifts in the reflected wavelength, leading to visible changes in color. The PCH sensors induce color changes as the distance between embedded colloidal particles changes in response to external stimuli such as swelling or shrinking of the matrix hydrogels. The PCH sensors respond to various stimuli, including volumetric changes such as thickness and length, as well as the concentration of the surrounding solution and the presence of heavy metal ions, exhibiting color changes. This enables real-time monitoring without requiring expensive equipment.
