In the quest to enhance the performance of proton electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), we have developed reinforced composite membrane (RCM) utilizing hydrophilic porous PTFE modified by Ar/O2 plasma treatment. Impregnation of hydrophilic ionomer into hydrophobic porous PTFE substrates has been limited due to repulsive force. The plasma modification technique significantly improved the hydrophilicity and surface energy of the porous PTFE substrate, mitigating these repulsive force and facilitating better impregnation of the ionomer. PEMFC assembled with these RCM exhibited superior performance metrics, demonstrating the effectiveness of the plasma-treated porous PTFE in enhancing fuel cell performance.
